Japanese Beetles have completely stripped my Iceberg and Charlotte roses (& totally ignored the 3 Robin Hood bushes 2′ away???). I had sprayed then with 2 differenct sprays and hung beetle traps as directed. When should I prune and how far back can I cut them since there is not a single leaf left?

Rose Fertilizers & Your Garden

Rose fertilizers provide the right blend of nutrients needed for your plants to produce quality flowers. You can plan for optimum growth of plants with a regular schedule of watering and feeding. The best time to start is when the first rose plant is added to the garden.

After the purchase has been made and you’re ready to add plants to the garden, the first step is to prepare the bed or container. As the hole is being dug mix in fertilizer or an enriched potting soil at the base. Proceed with planting and water well.

Roses can be picky about soil, in addition to a sunny location and a well drained soil, they need a pH of 6.5 to 7.0. Your local garden center should have inexpensive testing kits and can help explain how to adjust the soil’s pH if necessary. If the soil is too alkaline – add sulphur, for an acidic soil – add lime. Consult with your local gardening expert for further questions.

Applying rose fertilizer only at the time of planting is not sufficient; fertilizer should be applied every spring, middle of summer, and finally in the fall. Fertilizer is a balanced mix of the three essential nutrients plants need: nitrogen, potassium, and phosphorous. In portions of 10-15-10, the nitrogen helps foliage produce chlorophyll, phosphorous balances pH and promotes growth, and potassium helps the plant develop hardy canes and the ability to withstand cold temperatures. A slow-release type is preferred when buying a commercial product.

The first application should be made at the time of planting. The next step is to water and tend the plant as new roots grow. Watch the plant carefully for signs of the first leaf; allow 2 weeks to pass before feeding. Place the fertilizer around the base of the plant, a few inches away and lightly work into the soil then apply water.

In mid-summer when roses are in full bloom, fertilizer should be applied again. This feeding is crucial for continued growth of the plant. The activity involved in producing leaves and blossoms depletes the available nutrients. Liquid fertilizer can be used but will need more frequent applications as it’s weaker. Be careful not to get any on the leaves as it will burn them. Manure can be used as an organic alternative. When using chemical products, follow label instructions carefully.

Roses slow down with the advent of fall and completely stop growth for the winter. The last round of fertilizer should be applied, ideally, about 6 weeks before a hard frost. This application will sustain plants through the winter without promoting the growth of new stems. New growth is too tender to survive during cold weather. In the more temperate zones, roses can bloom for longer periods and may require a different feeding schedule. Consult your local rose gardening expert for specifics related to your climate zone.

How do you propagate roses by cuttings?

Question by Laurel Price: How do you propagate roses by cuttings?
I saw a horticulture video on propagation a few weeks ago, and I wanted to try propagation with cuttings on some of my roses after pruning. How does it work, and what do I do?

Best answer:

Answer by Amanda H
you use a rooting hormone found at most nursery centers. roses are hard to do like that.

let one branch get long enough that you can bury the branch in soil about 10-12 inches from the plant & from the stem tip. let it stay buried until roots form, which can take several weeks, then you take the cut between the bush and the soil & remove the branch & plant the roots.

good luck

feed well

How to take care of a mini-rose bush?

Question by bustylaroo99: How to take care of a mini-rose bush?
I just bought one and I am not really good with flowering plants. Do I need to prune it? How often do I water it? Plant it outside or keep it in a pot indoors? It is so pretty – help me keep it alive!

Best answer:

Answer by ash_crazy_tomboy
Pruning rose bushes is intimidating to many gardeners, but actually very good for the plants. Becoming an accomplished rose pruner takes time and practice, but keep in mind that it is very hard to kill a rose with bad pruning. While there is a great deal of disagreement among rose experts regarding how and when to prune roses, it is generally agreed that most mistakes will grow out very quickly and it is better to make a good effort at pruning roses than to let them grow rampant.
Timing is determined by the class of the rose plant and the zone in which it is growing. Most rose pruning is done in the spring, with the blooming of the forsythia as a signal to get moving. If you don’t have forsythia, watch for when the leaf buds begin to swell on your rose plants, meaning the bumps on the canes get larger and reddish in color.
