Clematis Care

Clematis are excellent for training on trellises, fences, porches and posts. Particularly effective used with climbing roses or scrambling through shrub roses and deciduous shrubs. They require support to climb. Prefer evenly moist, well drained, rich, slightly alkaline soil. Ample moisture in summer and early autumn is particularly important. The foliage and flowers prefer a sunny location, while the roots prefer a cool shaded situation. Annuals, perennials, ground covers, but not mulch, are satisfactory to shade the roots.

Pruning practice is related to flowering time and is divided into three groups with the corresponding Roman numeral appearing after the varietal name.

Group I: These clematis are the earliest to bloom, with the buds coming from the previous season’s stems. Thin and lightly prune to shape immediately after bloom.

]]>

Group II: These include many of the most spectacular and longest blooming of all clematis. They bloom primarily from the previous year’s stems, and therefore should not be pruned too heavily. Prune every year, in early spring just as the leaf buds start to unfurl. Remove dead or weak growth; prune only as far back as the first strong leaf buds. Spread and loosely tie the vines to their supports immediately after pruning. The Group II varieties are usually midseason bloomers, with later blooms coming on the current year’s growth. After the initial bloom fades, a light pruning enhances this rebloom.

Group III: These late-blooming clematis produce their flowers on the current season’s growth. They are best rejuvenated with heavy pruning every two to three years. Prune back to the lowest strong leaf buds (9 to 18 inches above ground level) in late winter or early spring. These varieties tend to make one very spectacular display. Delaying some pruning until March, or even April, will extend their blooming season. In years when rejuvenation is not required, a light trim in spring is beneficial. These are the best varieties to use intermingled with roses or other shrubs that require frequent pruning.

Two or even three contrasting varieties, with the same pruning requirements, planted together make an incredible display.

What is the CHAIN MAIL story of roses sent after death called?

Question by CJ S: What is the CHAIN MAIL story of roses sent after death called?
Since I first signed up for internet service in 1997 I have received several chainmail stories that were worth reading and as always I welcomed the witch like voodoo curses that come with NOT forwarding them and dump them into the trash. NOw I want to know what one was called. It was about a guy who bought roses for his wife… Umm every birthday or maybe it was Valentine’s Day… then he dies and he arranged for the delivery of the roses even after his death. What was that called?

Tips For Growing A Perfect Rose Of Sharon Garden

Rose Of Sharon

Many among us dream of having a huge house with a beautiful and colorful garden. Of course, not all of us manage to realize such dreams. It is important to know that you can always start creating your own garden especially if you are determined enough to do it. For example, if you want to create a rose of sharon garden, then the first thing you need to do is to see if you have the necessary space and the necessary patience to start the project and maintain it over the months. If you have said yes to those requirements, then there is no reason for you not to start your rose of sharon garden.

Having a beautiful flower garden is really inspiring however small your home is. You might be living in a very wide rural lot or you can live in a one or two bedroom apartment. This, however, can be good enough reason for you to start your very own small garden despite the size of your living space. It is important to remember that with flower gardens, you can wake up to beautiful sights in the morning; you can breathe fresher air and you can even enjoy the scent of blooms. However, it is important to be reminded that no flower garden would grow beautifully without you giving the needed effort and without enough labor.

]]>

If you are a beginner to gardening, then you can start of with your rose of sharon garden by starting out small. You can reserve a specific plot in your backyard, in your front yard or even in your terrace. Compute for the available square feet of space and determine if you are going to plant your flowers directly on land or using flower pots.

It is also essential to keep in mind that not all kinds of flower plants grow on the same way and conditions. You have to determine if your particular flower can grow in the kind of climate your place has. Not only that, you should also evaluate the soil quality in your area because they can affect the growth and blooms of your flower plants.

It is important that your small rose of sharon garden get sufficient sunlight. This does not mean that you have to subject the flowers to too much sun the whole day. It is important that you give it right amount of sunlight to let your plants grow healthy, strong and flowering.

Whether you are after a small garden full of rose of sharons or if you are after a garden with different kinds of plants and fruit-bearing trees, it is important to keep in mind that you must first learn about it and practice. Do not be disappointed once you start planting and find your plants not flowering even after months. You must evaluate where the process went wrong and you must pinpoint the solution you can do to have a successful flower garden.

Roses in Art – Heal, Nourish and Indulge

As an artist as well as a writer, I can say without a doubt that there are many misconceptions about art. In my search for a rose-artist, I found Gina De Gorna. Her art techniques, styles and paintings of roses in oil were the subjects I found exceptional. Whether painting a single rose or a bouquet of roses, she captures in vivid detail this beautiful flower.

Not all of us have a sense of color or even proportion – but everyone can learn how to ‘use’ them. The secret is in learning how to “feel” what the artist is actually “saying” to you from his or her painting.

Each artist may paint the same object in a different manner; it is only because those objects must first become an image in the mind of the artist before it is then translated to a corresponding image on the canvas. The final image painted on canvas could appear to be nothing like the image as seen by human eyes. But to both the artist and the connoisseur, the images are very real. There are no two roses exactly alike, and if you study the old Masters you will find many interpretations of our rose.

]]>

But for the lack of confidence in one’s ability to reproduce various shapes or forms, say of a rose, ordinary people might overcome the biggest obstacle a person has to ever draw, paint or sculpt one. Gina paints in oil, acrylic and a variety of limited edition Giclee reproductions, cards and prints.

Much has been said about the ‘balance of an artwork not affecting reality’… for the purpose of balance and a pleasant composition, artists often make their version of reality; this may mean your own version of that rose garden, or even a single rose.

Artists, therefore, do not copy exactly everything they see from a photo or nature. They freely change, omit or add elements of a scene, shapes, colors or interesting textures. This is called “artist’s license”, and please, do use it.

Do not be afraid to alter what appears to be reality. One person’s reality is not always another’s. Before attempting to paint a rose, a bouquet of roses or even an entire setting of a rose garden, you must first stare at the object of your thoughts. Then, allow your mind to wander and envision the endless colors that will appear before you. It does take a bit of practice, but in the end, you will learn how to focus on your own reality of the image or images you wish to place on your canvas.

If you are a rose lover, you may want to have a few pieces of rose art in your home. Perhaps as you hold a lovely rose in your hand, you might be tempted to capture its beauty on paper or canvas yourself. You have nothing to lose and a huge sense of accomplishment if you win. Indulge!

Poem: keeper of roses…. does this sound right?

Question by Amanda: Poem: keeper of roses…. does this sound right?
Any thoughts, comments, or improvements are welcome. Idea on a title? Thanks :0)

Wind-rocked remontant
Prune out your despair
Grafted in a slant
But not without care

Unmatched to fit growth
A Sucker un-torn
Knows not a good oath
When Chaos is born

Snit, Balled, or broken
Hips push the roughing
Truth is unspoken
Give up on nothing

Deceptive attacks
Shame, lonely with woes
Blind Shoot and Diebacks
Lame a budding rose
When I started this poem it was without rhyme or a theme. Growing up…my mom would always compare the hardships of life to a rose and its thorns. I don’t know how to grow roses…so I found a website with “Rose Terms” and went to work. Again thank you all for your comments. :0)

Biocontrol of Root-Rot Disease Complex of Chickpea: By Arbuscular Mycorrhizal Fungi and Other Phosphate Solubilizing Microorganisms

Biocontrol of Root-Rot Disease Complex of Chickpea: By Arbuscular Mycorrhizal Fungi and Other Phosphate Solubilizing Microorganisms

Soil provides an excellent niche for the rhizosperic microorganisms and seems to be the hot-spot for the microbial interactions. Among the soil microorganisms Arbsucular mycorrhizal and other phosphate solubilizing microorganisms can promote the plant growth and also very effective against the soil borne diseases. The mycorrhizal fungi have the ability to improve plant vigor, soil quality and also play a crucial role in nutrient uptake, water relations, ecosystem establishment and the productivity of plants. Similarly, phosphate solubilizing microorganisms can profoundly, improve the seed germination, root development, and water uptake by plants. Beside this they can also improve the nutrient uptake or indirectly by changing the microbial balance in favour of beneficial microorganisms in the rhizosphere and can suppress the broad spectrum of plant borne plant pathogens. Considering the importance of these symbionts in the plant disease protection, it came into highlight for research that the combined application of these microorganisms is more beneficial than use of single agent and provides a better management against the soil borne plant pathogens.
