Is Washington a good place to plant roses, daffodils, and star gazer lilies?
Question by kelsey: Is Washington a good place to plant roses, daffodils, and star gazer lilies?
I kind of want to plant all the plants above since I really like flowers. I would like some details on how they grow in the answer so I could get a good idea of what it would be like. So you might need to do some research for this question and you’ll become smarter.

You know, that last line could apply to you as well. You catch more flies with honey than vinegar, and being patronizing to people you are wanting help from is not always the best approach.
All those plants should grow in Washington. Roses want full sun. Lilies can do half a day. Daffodils are versitile, too, and can be planted under deciduous shade trees, as they come out and do their thing before the trees leaf out. Go for it.

Rose planting question?
Question by : Rose planting question?
Upon digging around a very old rose bush in yard, I discovered it was planted in the ground in a bucket… Is there a reason why some one would do this? Would it affect the way that the plant grows? Was it there to limit it growth? I’m baffled at the concept of essentially potting a plant in the ground. The plant is really thick, almost like a small tree it is easily as big around as my forearm. Again what is the purpose for the bucket, craziest thing I’ve ever seen.

Answer by Rachel
There are two reasons I can think of:
1. Laziness.
2. The person intended on bringing it back inside the house over the winter. Depending on where you live, roses can be difficult to winter over (such as my home state, MN). Because roses can be wintered as houseplants (though they do go into dormancy), many people like to bring their hybrid teas/grandifloras/floribundas inside over the winter.
There’s really no reason that leaving it in the pot would limit the growth. The rose, over time, would eventually root through the holes in the bottom of the pot, thereby making it useless anyways.

what do I need to plant a rose garden?
Question by Darinka Rodriguez: what do I need to plant a rose garden?
I want to start planting roses of every color (especially red, white and pink) do you know what do I need to buy I already have a rose plant all grown up but it only produces very tiny and thin pink roses, do you know how to make it produce better roses and if there’s any specific plants I need to buy to get the white and red roses?
Best answer:
Answer by sciencegravy
The kind of rose will determine the size and color of the rose. You have a variety that makes tiny thin pink roses – perhaps it’s “The Fairy” (a species of rose).
If you want roses that make bigger flowers, go with Hybrid Tea roses. And have your garden situated in full sun, with well-drained, nutritious soil. Side dress with compost, or fertilize twice a year with Espoma’s Rose-Tone (my personal choice)

My hostas stop growing big after planting a rose bush near them. Did the rose bush do this to the hostas?

Do they both compete for water?
Best answer:
Answer by goofinoff
They do compete for water, but I have no idea why the rose would hurt them. Usually roses like sun and hostas, shade, so I would think one of them would be unhappy. Also, hostas like to sit in one place a long time undisturbed, in order to grow big; if digging too near disturbed them, that is possibly your answer.

How come my rose plants keep dying?
Question by T!ka :): How come my rose plants keep dying?
This spring I am going to try (for the 3rd year in a row) to grow a couple rose plants. I buy the plants from Walmart and everytime I plant them in my yard they just die. I water them, they’re in about half sun, half shade. But they just always die right away! 3 years of growing roses and not one flower to show for it!
Are there any tricks or tips I should know to help them grow? BTW I won’t be planting them for a few months but I just want to know.
Best answer:
Answer by Sergio
Leaves turning yellow is a ‘sure sign’ of overwatering.
Make sure you have plenty of root room in the pot and only water once a week by placing your plants in the shower for a few minutes and let all the water drain.
One more thing: some of my plants are doing much better without direct sunlight. for example , my spider plant used to get those little burnt tips ..but not anymore.
