My roses will not bloom…?

Question by LORI: My roses will not bloom…?
I planted some “Don Juan climbing roses” probably 9 months ago and the stems, thorns and leaves are beautiful it has doubled in size and climbing like crazy but it hasn’t bloomed yet. I have not pruned it at all and it has the best spot in the yard to get plenty of sunlight, water and rest. So it just looks like greenery, pretty greenery with no blooms can someone give me some tips please.

Best answer:

Answer by Yarddoccarol
Rose ‘Don Juan’ is one of my favorite roses. It’s tough, has little problem with black spot and tends to bloom all the time – usually.

For best blooming roses ned at least 6 to 8 hours of sun a day, regular water and fertilizer. Also, they should not be sheared when pruned. Since you said there is plenty of sun, water and they have not be pruned, then it must be something else.

My best guess is in your statement “the leaves are beautiful it has doubled in size.” This indicates the possibility of not of sun or too much nitrogen. Leaves and plants stretch in low light, so check your light again.

Most likely you have been very kind applied lots of fertilizer. If you have lots rich, dark green leaves and rapid growth this would indicate lots of nutrients. Unfortunately, some plants are lazy. Growing flowers is hard work, if you have an abundance of nutrients around why do the work of growing flowers? Cut back a bit on the nutrients and you should see a few blooms.

Poem: keeper of roses…. does this sound right?

Question by Amanda: Poem: keeper of roses…. does this sound right?
Any thoughts, comments, or improvements are welcome. Idea on a title? Thanks :0)

Wind-rocked remontant
Prune out your despair
Grafted in a slant
But not without care

Unmatched to fit growth
A Sucker un-torn
Knows not a good oath
When Chaos is born

Snit, Balled, or broken
Hips push the roughing
Truth is unspoken
Give up on nothing

Deceptive attacks
Shame, lonely with woes
Blind Shoot and Diebacks
Lame a budding rose
When I started this poem it was without rhyme or a theme. Growing up…my mom would always compare the hardships of life to a rose and its thorns. I don’t know how to grow roses…so I found a website with “Rose Terms” and went to work. Again thank you all for your comments. :0)

Where can I learn how to care for my CL Don Juan climbing rose bush?

Question by AMBER: Where can I learn how to care for my CL Don Juan climbing rose bush?
I have wanted a rose bush so my friend got me one. I’ve been looking on the internet trying to find how to care for it (its a Don Juan) and having some trouble. I would like if you could recommend a couple websites to try. I’m a little worried because what I’ve found is that they are sort of difficult to care for. I need to know how to support it, protect it from winter, how to plant it so it’s well drained, and other basic information. I have never had a rose bush so I want to succeed with this one. Also I need to know if there is a good video you can recommend about how to prune roses.

You have a very thoughtful friend!
Here is a site which talks about this variety
http://www.ehow.com/how_6064448_plant-don-juan-climbing-roses.html This site is really good as it explains how roses need good sunlight to flower. On the same page you will find detailed instructions on how to prune it etc, but don’t worry you won’t need to prune for quite a few months yet!

2 Oprah is Jealous Talk Show Starring Fay Koprah! c/c?

Question by BG: 2 Oprah is Jealous Talk Show Starring Fay Koprah! c/c?
Fay Koprah – Welcome to our second show! We have two guests today! Our guests are the lovely poetess, Sin, (thunderous applause) and esteemed critic, The Genuine Mighty Iano! (…………………. canned applause)
Fay Koprah – Uh, well. Well, Sin, we are so pleased you were able to be here today!
Sin – My pleasure, Fay! Entirely!
Kay Koprah – (checks notes) My, I see you are quite the prolific poetess! I, personally have read you faithfully and find your words so enriching, so pleasurable! You have quite the talented pen! (thunderous applause) It isn’t your turn, Dear Iano, but if there’s a problem with your trousers, wardrobe will help you. (off camera, two security guards deftly duct-tape TGMI’s mouth and drag him off stage.) Now, Sin, I applogize for that. This is taped live, and we often have little…uh, unfortunate interruptions.
Sin – Quite alright, Fay.
Fay Koprah – Sin, I was particularly intrigued with one of your latest writes – your gardening poem about pruning roses and all? I think our audience would enjoy knowing how you were inspired to write it. (thunderous applause)
Sin – Why, thank you. Well, I had this seed of an idea, played with it awhile, gave up, returned to it…. I was so frustrated; all these words I wanted – NEEDED – to say. After toying with it for days, the words came so fast they fairly exploded! What a relief!
Fay Koprah – Oh, dear. I had no idea poets had to work so hard to produce their poetry…
Sin – Oh, it’s true. And then, of course, we put it out and the critics rip into us before the ink is dry. (Fay grabs tissue, wipes her eyes, honks) Oh, don’t feel sorry for us; it’s our lot in life. Most great poets aren’t discovered until years after their deaths… At least I can look forward to (sob) that!
Fay Koprah – My Dear Sin, I am FAY KOPRAH; Your books – all of them – will be reviewed on my Oprah is Jealous Talk Show and you will be a bestsell…(stagehand interrupts, whispers to Fay & hands her a phone) Uh, excuse me, Sin, Audience…
Fay Koprah – (to phone) Well, I’ll have to ask her… Hold a sec… Sin, would you be available Friday? Michelle is requesting you give a read…
Sin – Michelle?
Fay Koprah – Oh, here…(hands Sin the phone) Obama, Dear! Michelle Obama… Please remind her not to call when we’re taping the show! How rude is that? See, we’re out of time! So sorry we didn’t have time for……uh, Hiram? Yes, Happy Hiram, to do his half of the show. Next time, maybe. Ba-bye for now!
(from back stage)…mmmmmPaaaaannnnnnnnnnnntttssssss…

(Any resemblance to persons living or dead is entirely intentional…but all done in affectionate fun.)
Thanks! Eye’ll keep my I on you.

Sin, did you not know t’is an *honour* to be pantsed by TGMI. Oh, for the days he knew I was alive… (Hi, Iano. Know you peeked in to read this. You dere, Iano?) sigh*.*
But I need a fake oprah…er… Fay Koprah, Ma. Nah, I be jest fine living in Anonymousville, where everyone’s an Iano (and pays me no mind) and I can stay in my jammies allllll day. It’s comfy.
Plain or extra butter, Gideon?

Question by TaraDactyl: What’s eating my rose bush?
I went outside today to prune my rosebush an there were bite marks on the leaves (see picture). Some helpful information might be that I live in Ohio and it’s been about 90 degrees the last couple days. I would also appreciate it if you could tell me how to get rid of it. Thank you!

My roses have a weird almost “tumor”?

Question by Andrea L: My roses have a weird almost “tumor”?
growing right underneath where the flower would bloom from. Now, I’ll admit that I’m a VERY novice rose grower, but I can’t find what these are anywhere on the net. I’m getting ready to prune them for the winter which is why I noticed these weird growths. They were fine all summer, this is the first time I’ve seen these “tumors”. I just want to find out if it’s some sort of disease or not and how to fix it.

FWIW, I have 5 rosebushes clustered together and only one bush has these growths on it.

I’ve got some pics, but can’t figure out how to attach them here. If someone knows, I’ll be happy to put them up….

How do I take care of rosebushes?

Question by Mandy: How do I take care of rosebushes?
I recently bought my first house, and the landscaping has about 45 mature rosebushes! I don’t know anything about gardening, let alone roses. Most of the bushes are 4 feet high, most are budding; a few are enormous at about 10 feet x 10 feet, and have dozens of blooms.

What should I do to take care of them? How much water, how often and how do I prune, what soil do they need? THANK YOU in advance for your help! :)

Best answer:

Answer by chefgrille
Well, they’re already planted in the soil, so that’s working out well for them, don’t worry about what type of soil they’re in. We don’t even water our rose bushes unless it’s a really dry summer, then each one get the garden hose laying at the base of it (don’t spray the leaves or blooms) for about 10 minutes once a day either in the morning or evening, not during hot times or the water will just evaporate off the ground fast.

As for cutting, just cut each one maybe an inch from where it comes off the bigger branch. That way you’ll still get more blooms out of it.

Could I get opinions on one more short story?

Question by John S: Could I get opinions on one more short story?
Hi I would like to write a collection of short stories similar to this one, with the connecting thread being the phrase “Something to keep in mind:” appearing at the end of every story. But first I wanted to get some feedback on one more story.

If you like this one, I’ve posted two others at this link, feed back is always welcome on those too:

http://www.worthyofpublishing.com/book.asp?book_ID=2663

………………………

Present day:
“It was all about the rose.”
“The rose.”
“Yeah, the rose.”
“How do the deaths of 22 people relate to-”

5 weeks ago:
“I don’t know, it seems alright to me, a good way to make money.”
“I don’t wanna date a homo, even if he’s rich.”
“What?”
“Isn’t that the kind of stuff they do? Prune roses and own poodles and ******?”
He doesn’t really need to think about this. If she doesn’t like the idea, then she won’t get any of the cash, and that means she won’t get any of the coke. You know, reap sown seeds and all that.
“I don’t know… Stacie, you need to listen. Help or get outta my house.”
“Help? Like what? Hold the clippers?”
“The first place prize is five hundred dollars.”
“Shit. Really?”
“We could get a month’s worth with that kind of money.”
“I’m in.”

4 weeks ago:
They’re sitting by the window without any ideas, trying to decide where to cut it. Bam. The room lights up and outside two cars sit in the middle of the street. Head-on. No survivors. They run out and try to help, run out and try to stop the bleeding. It’s not happening.
Two hours later they’re back inside, after ambulances and police and paramedics. It seemed unnecessary, call a clean-up crew and a good mortician, this one is open and shut. He glances at the rose, it’s stem is straighter. He goes to bed, wondering if Stacie might just have a green thumb after all.
The next day he’s up and calling her. He asks what did she do, she asks what the hell is he talking about. The stem, it’s straighter. Nope, she didn’t touch it.
So he sets up lights by the road and waits until dark. He sees two cars, he hits the button. Bam. Two blinded drivers. Bam. Two more cars sit in the road. And a rose sits inside with a few more petals.
He’s calling her again, telling her what happened. She doesn’t believe it. She needs to see it for herself.

2 weeks ago:
“I’m thinking we go over to Madison St. It’s got this real narrow stretch, it’s perfect.” she says.
“Sounds good to me.” He doesn’t care.
“What do you want to use?”
“How about a dumpster?”
“No, lets do it ourselves this time.”
“What does that mean?”
“I mean actually crash a car.”
“And what, commit suicide for a flower?”
“No, idiot. We put a cinder block on the pedal.”
“Where are we gonna get a car?”
“Steal one.”
“Ok, whatever.”
The car’s going at least 45, cinder block and all. Bam. It hits a minivan. At least five inside, all dead. But after, the rose looks like it shot up about a foot. Its petals look fantastic, that first place prize is theirs for sure.

2 days ago:
He’s not sure what they did wrong, where they made a mistake. The competition is only 3 days from now, but he’s in a prison cell.

Yesterday:
Turns out it was some old woman staking out a street corner from her living room window. She saw the whole thing. It didn’t matter now, he might go to death row.

Present day:
“It was like, ‘Bam, the perfect petal’, ‘Crash, the perfect leaf’”
“Oh yeah?”
“Yeah.”
“So it was worth it, killing all those people?”
“We weren’t killing people, we were crashing cars.”
“My mistake.”

Something to keep in mind: Old women can make pruning roses very difficult.

………………….

Thanks for any responses, but please be honest.

I have a trellis on which I had a Blaze climbing rose…the trellis is about 2 feet from my neighbor’s …?

Question by Maureen: I have a trellis on which I had a Blaze climbing rose…the trellis is about 2 feet from my neighbor’s …?
…property, and he is very picky about everything looking ‘perfect and manicured’.Apparently,he did not like the ‘wild, overgrown’ look of my mature Blaze on the trellis, and, without asking me,took it upon himself to prune it almost completely down to the ground. It looks like it is not going to come back at all.I know I have read about climbers to leave them alone instead of cutting them back like other rose bushes. What should I do?Buy another Blaze–plant it at the trellis–then send him the bill for the plant???
For the gardeners out there–any chance it may come back/climb again in the future?

i live in pickens S.C.when do i prune, how much?whats the trick to getting stronger scented and more blooms.we kinda just let them go last year didn’t cut them back or really take care of them at all. would appreciate any help.

Answer by Shalla V
Being an avid Rose grower, (NOT professional) I have found that pruning is best done when the canes start to appear(those thick shoots that look like mini tree trunks)…I trim back too, when I want to promote new growth.
Everyone has a different way of pruning. For me…as long as it looks tidy, and I havent destroyed the main growth parts of the rose whatever works is good.
Scented roses you have to buy them. You cant make light scented roses, stronger. They are not designed that way.
I have found in my years…the stronger the scent the more bugs you have.
I will you give you my tried and true wash….for my roses and any other plant you have in your yard…that keep the bugs at bay and give them a jump start in growth…
I use a sprayer attached to my hose…and I have a smaller yard…combine these and you will be amazed…every week for the entire growing season
1 cup dish liquid and 1 cup antiseptic mouth wash and tobacco tea,,,
Which is made by soaking about 3 tbls spoons leaf tobacco, wrapped and tied tightly in a hose toe, or a something that can be easily removed when the water turns brown, I put mine in plastic apple juice container…I keep it in the back of my fridge tightly sealed.
Bugs hate it….plants love it….
