Notes: -Starts with a “too tall” grandiflora (“Strike it rich”?) -only use sharp tools -grandiflora discussion, like “Queen Elizabeth” [see: www.gardenguides.com -pruned height of rose depends on characteristics of rose -prune laterals short [3-4 buds?], long laterals are not desired -First new sprouts [of the new season] will be at the cuts, growth “shoots out the top” -take off little stubs -Nine sprouts will come out of each bud below the cut [over time?, lateral can be cut nine times at same location and stem buds will rebloom nine times?] -discuss recognizing maturity of rose (gray stalks vs. green) -take out “non-productive” canes [with inadequate rose numbers?] -open center of rose for sun and air when possible [take out laterals growing to center or crossing], but allow for greatest growth -old canes are kept, as peak production of roses can take 3-5 years, aim for good number of blooms -small laterals [diameter less than about 1/4"] are not that productive, so cut down to larger diameter of a lateral -Dan has an instinct for proper lateral length that is “what feels good” or is “when my heart tells me” [to resist cutting a lateral] -giving a pruned rose different length canes prevents a flat topped rose later -one cannot control the direction of the rose growth, but try to get the sun / air into the center of …

Its essential to healthy roses, yearly pruning. You can wait til February or March to start pruning, but it has to be done, every year, don’t worry, it will grow back! Every year use a sulfur spray or copper spray. Even the best gardens get bolds and blights. Copper spray is organic and it works great as a fungicide. When you have a damaged stem you need to cut it off otherwise pathogens will get into the vascular tissue through that damage.
